Pd, revolt on the code of ethics. The first effect? Ilaria Salis is prohibited from nominating… –

Edoardo Romagnoli

After much discussion, the suggestion that Ilaria Salis should be a candidate for the Democratic Party in the European elections has definitively faded. However, it was not the Catholic wing of the party, ready for an internal operation, that ousted her from the lists, it was not any cacicchio, but the code of ethics.
There was no need even for the new text integrated and updated by Antonio Misiani, the 2008 one was enough. In fact, the code of ethics requires that each candidate present, before being put on the list, certificates of criminal records and pending charges. The teacher from Milan, now in prison in Budapest, with her four final convictions, would not have been able to personally engage in an electoral competition. Among the sentences we read: resistance to a public official during the eviction of anarchist activists from a social center in Milan and during the eviction of a building in Saronno, invasion of buildings, but there is also a conviction for dangerous ignition and explosions for having thrown of smoke bombs and firecrackers within the perimeter of the Milan prison.

In short, it would have been unpresentable. And precisely on the unpresentable Misiani he returned to the code of ethics, presented two days ago in Campania, explaining how «we have not written a new code of ethics: the Democratic Party has had one since its foundation in 2008, what we have approved is a regulation for preventive control of the transparency of the applications”.

Regardless of whether the regulation or code of ethics is in question, it provides for the adoption of a series of procedures to ensure maximum transparency in the process of selecting candidates on the PD lists. “With particular reference – Misiani wrote on social media – to the preventive verification of the possible existence of conditions hindering the candidacy and conditions of ineligibility”.

So it was clear right from the start that the candidacy would not be possible. And looking back at the story from the beginning, you can’t help but notice how badly it was handled. The suggestion was born towards the end of March with Schlein who called together his faithful to explore Salis’s candidacy. When the indiscretion is published in the newspapers, the first to thunder is the father of the Milanese teacher who complains about not having been informed. Not only. For Roberto, the idea of the candidacy had been handled badly because he “had left Ilaria in the hands of the Dem currents”.

Then the clarifying meeting at the Nazarene in which Roberto had set a safe place for his daughter as a condition to prevent a failed candidacy from damaging her. Open up heaven. A clear message arrives from the party to Schlein: “If you nominate Salis we will remove you from the party.” And so Schlein goes to Vespa to announce the reversal: «No candidacy for Ilaria». Omitting to say that in any case, due to the party’s code of ethics, she would not have been able to be a candidate anyway. There are two hypotheses: either Schlein doesn’t know the party rules or she wanted to send a message to the skin of an Italian citizen imprisoned abroad. In both cases a beautiful mess.
