You are about to move and you want to take out an electricity and/or gas contract for your new home, or simply change supplier for your current home. In both cases, you will be asked to provide your PDL and/or PCE, which are codes associated with your electricity or gas meter. If you don’t know where to find this information, here are some things that may help you.
The PDL (Delivery Point) number and the PCE (Counting and Estimate Point) number are two important identifiers used by electricity and gas suppliers in France. They are used to locate a building’s electricity or gas meter and to manage energy contracts with customers.
A PCE number: What is it?
The PDL number is the unique number assigned to each electricity or gas delivery point. It is made up of several numbers and letters and is usually indicated on the electric or gas meter, as well as on energy bills. The PDL number is used by electricity and gas suppliers to identify the point of delivery and to take meter readings.
The Delivery Point allows your electricity supplier or the Enedis network manager to locate your electricity meter and your home on the electricity network. The PDL is used for traditional counters, while the PRM is used for advanced counters, such as the Linky counter. This code is needed when you move house or change provider.
A PCE number, what is it?
The PCE number, on the other hand, is a unique number assigned to each metering and estimation point. It is used by electricity and gas suppliers to estimate a building’s energy consumption and to set energy prices. The PCE number is usually indicated on quotes and energy contracts.
The Metering and Estimate Point is used to identify your gas meter and your accommodation on the gas network. It is used for traditional and advanced meters, such as the Gazpar meter. Each gas meter has its own PCE, which consists of 14 digits. It is required in the event of a move or a change of gas supplier. Like the PDL number, the PCE is used by gas suppliers and by the GRDF network manager to locate your meter and your accommodation on the gas network.
What is the difference between PDL and PCE numbers?
The PCE metering and estimation point and the PDL delivery point are two 14-digit codes, which allow your energy supplier to identify your meter and the location of your accommodation. They are used when establishing a new contract, or commissioning your installation. Although these two numbers have many similarities, they are not interchangeable. The PCE number is used when you consume natural gas, while the PDL number is used when you consume electricity.
Where can I find the PDL number and the PCE number?
There are several ways to find your meter’s PDL or PCE codes:
- On your electricity and gas bills:
If you have just moved into a new home, you can find this information on the previous occupant’s invoice. If you just want to change provider for your current home, look at one of your electricity or gas bills. Meter codes should be listed on the left side of the bill.
- By contacting your energy supplier:
If you cannot find the codes on your invoices. It is possible to contact the electricity suppliers or the network operator (EDF for electricity, GRDF for gas) to obtain this information. They should be able to provide you with the codes you need. You can contact them by phone or by going to their website and using their online chat service. You will only need to provide some information about the accommodation, such as the address and the name of the owner, to obtain the PDL number and the PCE number.
- On your electricity and gas meters:
You can also check if the PDL number and the PCE number are indicated on the electricity or gas meter of the accommodation.
If your home is new, your PCE and PDL numbers do not yet exist because they have not yet been assigned to you. To obtain these numbers, your home must first be connected by the gas (GRDF) or electricity (Enedis) distributor. Once the connection has been made, the distributor will provide you with your identification number. You will then have to communicate it to your supplier so that your installation can be commissioned.
It is essential not to confuse the PDL number with the registration number and the serial number of the electricity meter.
