Around 200 people started walking a little before noon, peacefully and to music. Members and supporters of the ruling Benno Bokk Yakaar (BBY) coalition came from all over the city, at the call of different neighborhood, women’s and youth political movements.

In sportswear, they paraded with t-shirts reading “Together for a victory in the first round of Amadou Ba” and “For peace and national cohesion”.

The demonstrators to whom RFI was able to speak say they are worried about the polarization of political life and the rise of hate speech on social networks, in a very unstable regional context. They want to maintain the tradition of stability of Senegal and Teranga, Senegalese hospitality. “ Senegal has a tradition of peace and the reputation of a country where we live together. This peace is under threat because a journalist was brutally attacked two days ago – this is part of the reason for our march today », Explains Aliou Mara, coordinator of the APR party in the commune of Sicap. “ We want to go to the elections, but we want to go there in a spirit of peace, of competition but we are not enemies », Adds Aboubacar Sédikh Beye, APR activist in the commune of Dieuppeul.

They want Amadou Ba to remain the majority candidate, despite the uncertainties over the continuation of the electoral process which could restart the list of candidates from scratch. “ There is no other obvious candidate for our coalition. This is the best way to continue the country’s development work started by President Macky Sall. “, affirmed demonstrators.
