Pedal in the footsteps of the great impressionists

On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Impressionist movement, the “La Seine à Vélo” cycling route which connects the capital to the sea in Normandy offers cycling in six stages in the footsteps of the great masters of the movement in the territories which saw the latter being born and growing.

Throughout a route in six stages from Paris to Honfleur or Le Havre, cycle tourists will be able to discover the exhibitions and cultural events dedicated to the 150 years of Impressionism, as well as the emblematic places and landscapes along the Seine which inspired the painters. An immersive and inevitably colorful cycling experience.

Stage 1 : Paris – Chatou (30 km)

After having immersed themselves in the Impressionist decor in Paris thanks to three emblematic museums of the movement (Orsay, Marmottan Monet and the Orangerie), cycle tourists will cross the landscapes of Hauts-de-Seine which largely inspired Caillebotte, Seurat, Manet, Monet and so many others.

The little extra: the numerous activities organized for the occasion by the Tourist Office of Rueil-Malmaison or that of Gennevilliers.

Stage 2: Chatou – Mantes-la-Jolie (25 km)

On the Island of the Impressionists in Chatou, cycle travelers can sit facing the balcony where Renoir painted the “Canotiers’ Luncheon”. They will continue their bike ride in the footsteps of the Impressionists at the Maison Berthe Morisot in Bougival or at the Grenouillère museum in Croissy-sur-Seine…

The little extra: the Saint Germain Boucles de Seine Tourist Office offers more than 50 events around the 150 years of impressionism.

Stage 3: Mantes-la-Jolie – Giverny (42 km)

Cycle tourists will cycle through small villages and the meanders of the Seine frequented by Pissarro, Luce, Renoir, Monet…. In particular, they will be able to pass through the Hôtel-Dieu museum in Mantes-la-Jolie to discover Maximilien Luce, post-impressionist artist, through Vétheuil where they will come across the Maison Monet, or via two Chemins des painters.

The little extra: cross the Seine for free by ferry to see the landscape painted by Monet from Lavacourt.

Etape 4 : Giverny – Rouen (6 km)

In Giverny, travelers will immerse themselves in the artistic atmosphere by visiting Claude Monet’s House and its gardens, the Impressionism Museum or the workshop of the former Hôtel Baudy. In Vernon, they will be able to take their bike on a train to Rouen.

The little extra: The new restaurant “Oscar” by chef David Gallienne, within the Museum of Impressionisms, offers a menu inspired by Impressionism.

Stage 5: Rouen – Jumièges (54 km)

The “City of a Hundred Steeples” offers a diversity of impressionist experiences: Museum of Fine Arts, Côte Sainte-Catherine (panorama of the city painted by Monet in 1892)… Back in the saddle to reach Jumièges, they will cross La Bouille in particular. who knew how to seduce Turner, Sisley and even Gauguin.

The little extra: the numerous activities at Normandy Impressionists Festival (light show on the cathedral, David Hockney exhibition, etc.).

Stage 6: Jumièges – Le Havre (85 km)

In Le Havre, cycle tourists will discover the cradle of impressionism where Claude Monet painted his famous “Rising Sun Impression” and where many painters were seduced by its port and the Saint-François district. They can go to MuMa, renowned for its collection of impressionist works.

The little extra: the Les Fauves restaurant located facing the sea in the MuMa.

Stage 6 bis: Jumièges – Honfleur (70 km)

To end this artistic interlude, cycle tourists also have the possibility of cycling to Honfleur. They will be able to immerse themselves in the places which were once a source of inspiration for the Impressionists (the lively port atmosphere, the Sainte Catherine church, etc.) and discover the Eugène Boudin museum in order to contemplate the works of the artists who represented the city and the Normandy.

The little extra: take an outdoor painting class at the Saint-Siméon farm in Honfleur, a charming inn where many Impressionists stayed.
