Pedro Sánchez Cancels Andorra Trip Amid Leak Outrage and Ceuta Crisis

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has canceled a private holiday to Andorra following malestar over a leak of information, choosing instead to manage a crisis in Ceuta from Madrid. The canceled getaway, originally slated for a five-star resort in Soldeu alongside his wife, Begoña Gómez, collided with a crisis unfolding in the North African enclave of Ceuta.

From Pyrenean Refuge Back to Moncloa

According to reporting by ABC, the Prime Minister’s plans involved staying at the Sport Hotel Hermitage & Spa in Soldeu until August 30. However, those leisure arrangements unraveled on Wednesday afternoon during a meeting at the Palacio de la Moncloa. Following what ABC described as strong initial resistance from the premier, he was advised by his counselors to abandon the trip.

Territorial Policy Minister and mando único in Ceuta, Ángel Víctor Torres, announced that Sánchez will instead chair an extraordinary meeting of the Monitoring Committee via videoconference this Friday.

Managing the Ceuta Border Crisis From Afar

While the Prime Minister coordinates the state response remotely from Madrid, ministers remain in operational management on the ground. Torres and Inclusion, Social Security, and Migration Minister Elma Saiz are involved in the response, though it has not been clarified which of the two will remain in the autonomous city.

Wednesday’s coordination session brought together Torres, Saiz, Ceuta President Juan Jesús Vivas, and the government delegate in the autonomous city, alongside other ministers participating via video link. During the talks, officials underscored a shared objective: securing the return of all individuals who have remained in Ceuta since July 31 illegally. Executive representatives emphasized that the procedure will be carried out in accordance with legislation, though authorities have not yet released a concrete calendar or a precise number of those who could be affected by expulsion procedures.
