A heated campaign is expected before the second round of the presidential election in Slovakia. Former foreign minister Ivan Korčok, who is supported by the opposition, and Peter Pellegrini, the head of the Slovak parliament and the ruling party of the Voice of Social Democracy, advanced to the finals, which will take place on April 6. Acclaimed Czech political scientist Josef Mlejnek from the Faculty of Social Sciences of Charles University commented on the result of the first round for ŽivotvČesku.cz.
In his commentary, Mlejnek stated that Pellegrini, who received five percentage points less, has a larger reservoir from which to draw additional votes for the second round. Personally, however, he is more reserved when it comes to predicting who will win in the second round.
“I wouldn’t guess it. The favorite of the polls was Pellegrini, but Korčok produced an interesting result. It will depend on how the voters of the candidates from third place behave. It is hard to expect them to vote for Korčok, but most of them may not come to the second round of elections. If Pellegrini does not attract the voters of the candidates who did not advance, he may not succeed. The result showed that it could be more dramatic,” one of the most experienced Czech political scientists, Josef Mlejnek, said to ŽivotvČesku.cz, saying that Korčok is a more suitable candidate for better relations between the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
According to Mlejenko, Pellegrini’s strategy makes Korčok’s chances more difficult – that is the lowest possible number of televised debates. In contrast, Pellegrini is recording Easter, which shortens the real time of the campaign.
