Peloton Launches Space Ride Class with NASA Astronaut Jessica Meir from the ISS

NASA astronaut Jessica Meir broadcasted live from the International Space Station for a 20-minute Peloton class led by instructor Robin Arzón, offering riders a look at microgravity fitness routines and views of Earth from the orbiting laboratory’s cupola.

How Astronauts Exercise on the International Space Station

The class features Jessica Meir working out on a minimalist, unicycle-like exercise mechanism called the FERGO, or Flight Ergometer, which lacks a seat, handlebars, or a front frame. Because pushing down on standard pedals in microgravity would launch an astronaut backward toward the ceiling, Meir secured herself to the wall-anchored device using a wide waist belt and specialized straps on her cycling shoes.

Meir explained that bones begin leaching calcium simply because they lack normal terrestrial loading. Alongside cycling, astronauts utilize the Advanced Resistance Exercise Device, which handles up to 600 pounds for squats, deadlifts, and bench presses, alongside a T2 treadmill equipped with a harness and bungees.

The Public Release and Platform Availability

The specialized 20-minute class became available on-demand on the Peloton platform, with a public version arriving on Peloton’s YouTube channel on October 23, as yahoo.com reported. Throughout the session, Meir answered questions about maintaining health in isolation and shared demonstrations, including a midair water blob that she floated and caught in her mouth.

Cnet.com Senior Editor Laura Michelle Davis noted that the session provided an instructional look at how human bodies adapt to spaceflight while livestreaming a conversation from hundreds of miles above Earth straight into a New York City studio and home monitors.

Human Connection and Perspectives From Orbit

Beyond physical fitness, Meir discussed the psychological realities of long-duration spaceflight and the unique vantage point provided by the ISS cupola. yahoo.com reported that Meir emphasized the importance of teamwork and shared perspectives during her time in orbit.
