Personal data: the UFC-What to choose tool to clean up what the internet keeps from you

The UFC-Que Choisir put online this Wednesday morning at the address respectemesdatas.fr a free service which allows you to know what each site, social network, platform, etc. keep your passages. Data that determines the , suggestions and offers that are made to you and that you can therefore correct or even delete.

What data about you do the sites keep when you click yes when you arrive on a web page? What are the elements of your profile, your history on the web that remain in their memory and are usable? Because it is not so easy to measure it, because we do not know how to erase the traces of its passage, UFC-Que Choisir launched this Wednesday an innovative and free tool to help us, “in a context , in addition, of growing cybercrime”.

Three rights you need to know how to exercise

Associated with an awareness and information campaign entitled #IAmNotADatathe tool in question is available online at respectemesdatas.fr It allows “each Internet user to find out concretely what personal data is collected by the platforms he uses, explains the consumer association. But also and above all, to exercise his rights of rectification, deletion, and oblivion”, three fundamental rights.

“The web giants have made us into data, but that is not inevitable. Today, it is time to reverse the trend, to react by regaining control of our personal data. We have rights, exercise -them”, insists Alain Bazot, president of the UFC-Que Choisir. The association indeed observes that while European regulations, the GDPR, have reinforced these rights, “too few exercise them through ignorance and/or a feeling of complexity”.

A didactic and accessible procedure

The procedure imagined by respectemesdatas.fr is very didactic and quite simple and starts by clicking on “Recover your data” or on one of the icons of the main platforms, from Facebook to Netflix via Uber, or even on the “Other” box if the one you are looking for does not appear. You must then follow the steps indicated to download your data and “drag” the recovered file into the window that appears in step 2, that is to say in the analysis module and “Explore your data”.

In the form of graphs, “you will then be able to know what activities are tracked, what advertisements are sent to you and even the centers of interest that emerge from your profile”, observes Simon Aunai, editor of the Phonandroid site, who tested the procedure on Wednesday taking the example of Facebook. Once known the data that has been collected about you, you then have the ability to exercise these famous rights of rectification, deletion, and oblivion, again by a simplified procedure. Three fields must be completed in a form accessible by clicking on “Exercise your rights”.
