The Peruvian Public Ministry began the investigations while the ex-president was in the Prefecture of Lima for “breaking the constitutional order.”
The Peruvian Prosecutor’s Office ordered to initiate preliminary proceedings against former President Pedro Castillo for the alleged commission of the crimes of rebellion and conspiracy, after the announcement of the closure of Congress and the establishment of an “emergency government” in his country.
“The National Prosecutor’s Office orders to initiate preliminary proceedings against Pedro Castillo, in his capacity as president, for the alleged commission of the crime against the powers of State and constitutional order, modality of rebellion, to the detriment of the State,” the Public Ministry wrote in Twitter.
Immediately afterwards, he added that the investigation also extends to “the alleged commission of crimes against the powers of the State and the constitutional order, in the form of conspiracy, to the detriment of the State.”
On Wednesday night, Pedro Castillo was transferred to the Dinoes headquarters in the Lima district of Ate, after staying for more than eight hours in the Lima Prefecture after his failed coup attempt that violated the constitutional order.
Prior to that, he was taken to the Juan Benites barracks, in the Rimac district, to be taken from a helicopter to the Dinoes headquarters, where former President Alberto Fujimori is also present.
With the opening of this new preliminary investigation, there are already seven proceedings opened by the Attorney General’s Office against Castillo, who, among other crimes, is accused of allegedly leading an alleged criminal organization during his tenure to obtain illicit money from fraudulent public works tenders.
