Peruvian justice accepted the proposal of the Prosecutor’s Office to seize the assets of the recently extradited former president Alejandro Toledo, those of his wife Eliane Karp and those of his mother-in-law Eva Fernenbug for their transfer to the State, considering them the product of acts of corruption.
The Judiciary informed, through its account in Twitterthat the Specialized Transitory Court for Asset Forfeiture of Lima admits for processing a claim for asset forfeiture against eight real estate.
Information from the Peruvian Judiciary states that the lawsuit requires that the seized assets of former President Toledo, which include a house and an office purchased in the name of his mother-in-law, be transferred to the National Seized Assets Program (Pronabi) definitively.
The process also includes three parking lots and two deposits, registered in the name of Fernunbug’s mother-in-law, as well as her bank account worth $42,237.
Fernenbug was included in the proceedings against Toledo for having created the Ecoteva company in Costa Rica, which allegedly received part of the bribes by the former president of the Brazilian company Odebrecht to make real estate purchases in Peru, reports EFE.
Toledo was extradited from the United States on Sunday, in response to an 18-month preventive detention order, and was detained in the Barbadillo prison, east of Lima, to be prosecuted for money laundering, a crime for which he faces a request of 20 years and 6 months in prison.
