Murat Yakin’s Nati record is really that alarming

The Nati coach is behind on several points compared to his predecessor Vladimir Petkovic.
Under Yakin, Switzerland also looks worse against bigger opponents.
In the 3-3 draw against Belarus, the national team lost points for the third time in the current European Championship qualification against an opponent who was actually clearly weaker. The criticism of Nati coach Murat Yakin is getting louder – and not just unjustly, as some figures and examples show.
Lower scoring average
Switzerland has played 27 international matches under Murat Yakin. His record: 13 wins, seven draws and seven defeats. That’s an average of 1.7 points per game. This puts the 49-year-old behind the last two Nati coaches Vladimir Petkovic (1.79) and Ottmar Hitzfeld (1.77).
Mistakes against small opponents
In recent years, the national team has developed a sovereignty, thanks to which it has achieved victories with a high level of consistency in qualifying games against “easier” opponents. In 24 qualifying games against supposedly smaller teams, the national team under Petkovic only dropped points three times. It happened for the fourth time under Yakin against Belarus – in the eleventh game!
Clap against top teams
When looking at the record against big teams, Yakin is also at a disadvantage compared to Petkovic. Under his predecessor, the national team only suffered a defeat by more than two goals in 78 games. At the European Championships 2021 there was a 3-0 defeat in the group game against Italy. This is not the case for Yakin, who has already suffered a defeat twice in his 27 games: in June 2022 there was a 0-4 defeat against Portugal in the Nations League, followed six months later by a 1-6 defeat in the World Cup round of 16 against the same opponent .
