Paris, September 7th, 2023 (KAP/KNA) After the death of Jean-Louis Georgelin, engineer Philippe Jost succeeded him as site manager on the construction site of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. Jost, born in 1960, was previously deputy to ex-General Georgelin, who died in an accident in August. The Elysee Palace announced the personnel decreed by President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday.

According to French media reports, Jost emphasized that he was determined to maintain the spirit of this extraordinary construction site in order to achieve the goal of reopening the Paris Cathedral in December 2024.

The engineer and elite graduate explained that after the time of the bricklayers, the time of the carpenters began in the summer. The oak beams of the attic are in the making; as does the 19th-century crossing tower by Eugene Viollet-le-Duc, which collapsed spectacularly during the major fire in April 2019. You will probably see him again in his old form at the beginning of 2024.

150 companies involved in development project

“In the 15 months that we still have, a lot of sand can get in the way,” says Jost on record. Together with Georgelin, he had previously faced various difficulties at the construction site; for example with high lead levels inside the cathedral, autumn and winter storms or the corona lockdown measures.

Jost emphasized that in order to stay on course and on schedule, his predecessor Georgelin had done everything to instill a spirit of commitment, trust and cooperation in the extraordinary project. 150 companies and 500 employees are involved in the construction site. The coordination of the diverse work requires the precision of a clockwork.

Epitome of France’s cathedrals

The early Gothic Episcopal Church of Notre-Dame is a landmark of Paris. It is considered by many to be the epitome of France’s cathedrals. The church, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, is located on the Seine island Ile de la Cite in the historic center and was visited by around 12 to 14 million people a year before the big fire.

In the course of renovation work, a major fire broke out in April 2019, destroying the roof and roof structure, parts of the vault and the crossing tower. According to the government, the reopening desired by President Macron by the fifth anniversary of the fire cannot be complied with; December 8, 2024 is now announced.
