The exhibition 2 ¼ by Trois-Rivières photographer Robert Myrand will be presented at Factrie 701 from September 9. An opening in the presence of the artist will take place on September 10 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
“I am a photographer by default and by taste. By default knowing how to sing, dance or draw. And out of a taste for magic because at one time, photography was really magic! We put a sheet in the developer and the image appeared,” underlines Robert Myrand.
“I was working in an office, then frankly I was bored and I was thinking what could I do to express myself… I stopped at photography since there is both an artistic and a scientific side that interested me. So I decided to sell my tank and buy a 2 ¼ camera, then take photos,” he laughs. This is how, in 1969, Robert Myrand began his career as a photographer.
His first camera was therefore a 2 ¼ film. This camera had the particularities of having two lenses, as well as a large film (120 mm).
He says he recently acquired a new 2 ¼ camera. “In April 2023, I bought a new 2 ¼ camera and it’s very funny since it’s a plastic camera made in Hong Kong with a Russian lens. He adds, as the device is plastic, it lets light in from everywhere [d’autant plus que son objectif est de plastique aussi], we therefore accentuate the defects. Here, we are not looking for precision. Since I do black and white, we are more looking for shades of gray.”

Its exhibition thus brings together photographs captured by this new camera, as well as around ten 35mm shots forming a sort of retrospective. “The last image presented, we call it Modern Life and it’s digital.”
At 75 years old, Robert Myrand recognizes that there were more difficult times in his career as a photographer, which is why he was also a printer, translator and teacher. The fact remains that the Trifluvien has participated in more than 80 exhibitions in Quebec and elsewhere in the world. Several of his photographs are also part of the collections of the National Museum of Fine Arts of Quebec, the City of Trois-Rivières and several others.
