The Decree of Necessity and Urgency (DNU) 70/2023 was rejected this Thursday by the Senate of the Nation by 42 negative votes, 25 affirmative and 4 abstentions.

This result once again strains the relationship between the national government and Congressafter the meeting that took place a little less than a week ago between the governors and authorities of the Executive Branch, at the Casa Rosada.

In this way, the mega DNU that President Javier Milei issued at the end of last year, will arrive at the Chamber of Deputies in the coming days for treatment.

Although the result was negative in the Upper House, the DNU will remain valid -despite certain legal obstacles, such as the suspension of the labor chapter- until it is also rejected by the Lower House. Only under these conditions, with the rejection of both chambers, would the decree be without effect.

His treatment was motivated by the will of the Vice President of the Nation and head of the Senate, Victoria Villarruelwhich included it on the official agenda last Tuesday knowing that rejection was its final destination in the senatorial chamber.

Villarruel had just resisted several requests to address the mega-decree on campus, two from Kirchnerism and one signed by federal blocks, including a radical.

On Wednesday, at the parliamentary work meeting, the Vice President tried to persuade the leaders of the opposition blocs to extend the DNU discussion.

Villarruel’s decision to include it on the agenda generated a strong repudiation on social networks by the militias militancy and even the president himself slipped some -negative- guidelines in this regard.

In fact, Milei’s current main ally in Congress, José Luis Espert, questioned Villarruel’s objective having enabled the debate: “I don’t know why she did it. We should ask her what she thinks”

After learning of the rejection of the megadecree in the Senate with 42 negative votes, 25 affirmative votes and 4 abstentions, the Government released a statement with strong criticism of the opposition and stressed that this rejection of the DNU represents “attempt to undermine the May Pact, the National Government and the change chosen by the Argentines“.
