The journal The Lancet Healthy Longevity has published a review of 147 international studies concluding that three hours a week of exercise improve the health of the elderly in residences. Researcher Alejandro Lucía participated.

The main conclusion of this work is that routine physical exercise should be included in residences due to the improvements it brings to the physical function of the elderly.

Numerous studies show the effectiveness of physical exercise to attenuate the physical deterioration associated with age. However, conclusive research regarding the physical benefit of exercise for the elderly living in nursing homes, who tend to have functional dependence and to be medicated, had not been delved into.

This review of studies, carried out by researchers from various Spanish universities, such as Alejandro Lucía (Professor of Exercise Physiology of the European University), points out that around three hours a week of physical exercise improve the quality of life of the elderly, facilitating the performance of daily activities and gaining physical agility. In addition, he considers that exercise is beneficial regardless of the type of activity practiced.

Lucía explains that “physical exercise is not really given the importance it deserves for the elderly who live in residences who, on the other hand, are the great marginalized or forgotten in our society, with a general idea that it is difficult to improve the condition However, the review of the results obtained is clear and indicates that, whenever adequate medical control can be guaranteed, simple exercise programs adapted to this population should be included in the residences so that the elderly can take advantage of of the benefits of exercise.

The researchers reviewed 147 studies, involving more than 11,000 people, to conclude the effects of exercise interventions on physical function in those over 60 who live in residences. In addition, a network meta-analysis has been carried out that, using novel analysis techniques, allows the incorporation of information from direct and indirect comparisons from a network of studies that examines the effects of various treatments, in this case exercise, in a very complete way).
