Pia Kjærsgaard: Give the country’s pensioners 1,000 kroner more per month

This is a discussion post. The post is an expression of the writer’s own position.

The government has started negotiations on a reform for the elderly, and Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has in advance thrown a lot of prestige behind the reform in the form of advertising campaigns, nursing home visits and a New Year’s speech. So there should be something good in store.

Unfortunately, this is not the case.

The government has actually only set aside a paltry one billion kroner for an overall boost to the elderly area, and last week three parties were thrown out of the negotiations before they had even started.

One of these parties is the Danish People’s Party. As rapporteur for the elderly, I never made it to a single real negotiation meeting until the Minister for the Elderly called last week and informed me that we were no longer welcome.

As is well known, the Danish People’s Party is the party in Parliament that is most concerned with the conditions of the elderly.

So, with DF out and one measly billion to distribute, it is unfortunately absolutely certain that the government’s ‘elderly reform’ will end up being a huge disappointment for both pensioners, relatives and employees in elderly care.

In the Danish People’s Party, we believe that the country’s needy pensioners need much more than the trivialities the government is up to. We are putting the finishing touches on a financial plan and here we show how it is possible to give the elderly area a lift that can really be felt.

The elderly deserved better

We suggest, among other things:

1. All pensioners who currently receive a full pension supplement must receive DKK 1,000 tax-free per month, corresponding to DKK 12,000 per year.

2. 6.5 billion must be set aside. kroner for a boost in dignity in care for the elderly. Unfortunately, there are far too many examples of neglect, inadequate service and inhumane treatment. Let’s now once and for all raise care for the elderly to a dignified level.

3. The senior premium, which should make it attractive to stay on the labor market, should be expanded to DKK 60,000 for three years after the national pension. We need more seniors to stay in the labor market.

All in all, this is a significant boost for the elderly – far better than the trifle that the government is now negotiating with other parties without the Danish People’s Party.

Because honestly: The elderly deserved better.
