“The equipment is demilitarized and unusable,” he told CNN.

The Biden administration has faced heavy criticism over images of the Taliban seizing billions of dollars in US military equipment it provided to Afghan security forces, which collapsed with the US withdrawal from the country.

“The Taliban can search whatever they want. They can look at it and they can walk around, but they can’t fly it and they can’t operate it,” Kirby told CNN.

“We made sure that all the equipment at the airport was disarmed and unusable,” Kirby said, adding that the only equipment that remained operable were “two fire trucks and some cranes” so the airport could return to work. “We’re not overly concerned about these photos walking around,” he added.

Kirby, who has been facing constant questions about scenes of chaos in Kabul over the past few weeks, said historians will write about whether the war in Afghanistan ended in a “defeat” for the United States.

“What I can say is that we have prevented Afghanistan from becoming a safe haven for attack on the United States. In the process, American and coalition forces, our NATO allies and our Afghan partners have made a lot of progress in that country,” he said.

He added that the United States and the international community would now pressure the Taliban to fulfill the promises they made before the US withdrawal.
