Pierce County Sheriff Blames Trump for Republican Midterm Losses

“President Trump owns the Republican losses nationwide, and here in Washington,” Pierce County Sheriff Keith Swank said in a post on X just one day after the 2026 Midterm Election.

The pointed critique from Swank, a law enforcement official who has previously supported Donald Trump’s immigration enforcement policies, highlights that Trump is to blame for what Swank predicts Washington Democrats will do in Olympia in the next two years. The Pierce County sheriff’s public rebuke comes as early midterm results show significant Democratic gains across the country, prompting sharp recriminations over inflation, housing costs, and foreign policy.

“He didn’t finish the war in Iran,” Swank wrote on X. “Gas prices are up. Cost of living is up. Republicans are mad at him, and they either didn’t vote or they voted Democrats just to ‘show him’ how mad they are.”

Midterm Setbacks and Local Fallout in Washington State

Swank’s online statements draw a direct line between national voter dissatisfaction with the federal administration and down-ballot vulnerabilities for red voters in Washington. While the Pierce County official previously supported Trump’s immigration enforcement policies, his post-election analysis lays the blame squarely on the White House for what he anticipates will be an aggressive legislative push by state Democrats in Olympia over the next two years.

In his social media thread, Swank warned his followers that empowered state Democrats could soon pursue several contentious measures. Among his predictions, he stated that Democrats would seek to impeach Donald Trump, Pete Hegseth, and Kash Patel, defund Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), alter the state income tax threshold to $500,000, accelerate business departures from Washington, and mount legal challenges against the results of Initiative 638.

The stark warnings arrive as Washington joins a broader nationwide wave of electoral setbacks for the GOP. Across the country, midterm outcomes delivered heavy blows to the presidential agenda, including high-profile Democratic victories and legislative shifts in both chambers of Congress.

Voters Reject Pierce County Sheriff Charter Amendment

The sheriff’s political commentary coincides with a local ballot measure concerning his own office. Pierce County voters are actively rejecting Charter Amendment No. 53 by a decisive margin, with current returns showing 66.7% opposed and 33.3% in favor, according to election data.

The proposed amendment, put forward by the Pierce County Charter Review Commission, would fundamentally alter Section 3.70 of the county charter. Under the measure, the office of sheriff would cease to be an elected position, and the current elected term would terminate early on January 1, 2027. Instead of facing the ballot box, future sheriffs would be appointed by the county executive and confirmed by a majority of the County Council. Opponents of the amendment have consistently argued that stripping away the electoral process infringes upon voters’ fundamental rights to choose their top local law enforcement official.

At the same time, local voters are weighing a related proposal, Charter Amendment No. 54, which would establish an independent Public Safety Ombuds Office to provide external oversight of the sheriff and the sheriff’s department. Early returns indicate that measure is also trailing, with 52.3% voting against it and 47.66% voting in support.
