Vienna’s festive season officially kicks off on November 6, when the city’s earliest Christmas markets open their gates, setting the stage for weeks of seasonal stalls, punch stands, and traditional crafts across the Austrian capital.
While the first markets open their doors in early November, MeinBezirk reported that the vast majority of Vienna’s traditional Christkindlmärkte launch around November 13. Among the first to welcome visitors on November 6 are the markets at Stephansplatz, operating daily from 11 a.m. to 21 p.m., and the sprawling imperial backdrop of Schloss Schönbrunn, which features 90 market stalls, curling facilities, and a Ferris wheel running from 10 a.m. to 21 p.m.

Additional locations join the festive lineup throughout the month. Blumengärten Hirschstetten opens its floral Christmas exhibition and light installations on November 12, running Thursdays through Sundays from 10 a.m. to 20 p.m. On November 13, activity expands significantly with openings at the Rathausplatz, the Karlskirche Resselpark craft market, the Altes AKH, Spittelberg, the Türkenschanzpark, and a brand-new location at Schwarzenbergplatz featuring the Hochstrahlbrunnen light installations.
Schedules and Dates Across Vienna
The city’s extensive network of Advent markets brings differing operating hours and seasonal timelines depending on the district. AwesomeVienna reported that the Altwiener Christkindlmarkt on Freyung runs from November 14 to December 23, welcoming visitors daily from 10 a.m. to 21 p.m. Meanwhile, the prominent Christkindlmarkt am Rathausplatz operates from November 14 through December 26, opening daily from 10 a.m. to 22 p.m., with shortened hours on December 24 closing at 18:30 p.m.
Further distinctions appear in suburban and specialized locations. The historic K&K Weihnachtsmarkt in front of Schloss Belvedere opens on November 20, running Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 21 p.m. and weekends from 10 a.m. to 21 p.m. Concurrently, the winter market at the Riesenradplatz in the Prater launches on November 20 under the banner “Der Prater rockt,” offering live music and family entertainment from midday until late evening.
Transition to New Year Markets
Several locations extend their operations past Christmas Day to encompass New Year celebrations. AwesomeVienna noted that the Schloss Belvedere location transitions into a Silvesterdorf starting December 27 and running through December 31. Similarly, markets in Favoriten, Meidling at the Meidlinger Platzl, and Schloss Schönbrunn roll directly from their Christmas schedules into specialized New Year and cultural markets extending into early January 2026.
