PIT-Sénégal Issues Sévère Assessment of Governance and Economic Crisis

On November 7, 2026, the Central Committee of the Parti de l’Indépendance et du Travail (PIT-Sénégal) met in Thiès under the chairmanship of Samba Sy to issue a severe assessment of the current regime’s governance, Pressafrik reported.

The party leaders asserted that the country is experiencing an economic, social, and political crisis without precedent. According to the official PIT declaration, non-oil growth dropped to 2.5% in 2025 and stands at 2.7% in 2026.

Debt service now accounts for two-thirds of the national budget, while interest payments consume a quarter of tax revenues. Party leaders attributed this financial deterioration to the September 2024 disclosures regarding hidden debt, which led to the closure of international financial markets. They also cited the parliamentary majority’s rejection of the rectifying finance bill on November 3, 2026.

Social Tensions and Economic Pressures

On the social front, the Central Committee’s document backed the actions of the Front Syndical pour la Défense du Travail (FSDT) following the general strike in October 2026. The resolutions condemned the failure to respect agreements signed with labor unions and the unilateral modification of the Labor Code.

Le PIT Prépare Les Échéances Électorales De 2027

Abordant le volet institutionnel marqué par les tensions du duo Diomaye-Sonko, le texte politique du PIT a posé les jalons des échéances électorales de 2027.

The party advocated for building a broad opposition coalition to overcome current legislative blocks through the consolidation of the Front pour la Défense de la Démocratie et de la République (FDR) and the transformation of the Confédération pour la Démocratie et le Socialisme (CDS) into a federation.

The Thiès resolution concluded with a tribute to Professor Maguèye Kassé, who passed away in July 2026. It also praised the success of the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games (YOG), viewing it as proof that the nation possesses the necessary potential to recover through collective efforts and existing infrastructure.
