Sony is currently working on developing 12 games as a service for the upcoming years of the PlayStation brand. With this format playing a significant role in future planning, the company confirmed this week that it has postponed the release of half of these titles. As a result, the Japanese giant still has 6 “GaaS” games scheduled for release in the 2025 fiscal year.
Focus on games as a service and multiplayer
In a conversation with the company’s shareholders, Hiroki Totoki, president, COO and CFO of Sony, stated that Sony still maintains a strong focus on games as a service and multiplayer titles. Totoki assured that this remains company policy; however, he stressed that the most important element is quality.
We are reviewing these and trying our best to ensure that they are enjoyed by players for a long time to come. Out of 12 titles, six will be released in fiscal 2025. That’s our plan. We are still working on the other six. This is the total number of service and multiplayer games that we want to publish in the medium and long term, and this is the company’s policy, which has not changed. But quality is the most important thing
Idea does not please players
While Sony remains steadfast in its planning, many PlayStation console owners have expressed concern about the future. With the brand having a history of offering single-player journeys that are a big differentiator, with titles from established franchises such as God of War, The Last of Us, Uncharted and others, players believe that focusing on games as a service can reduce the burden of exclusives.
While the idea of entering the multiplayer market with force may seem profitable, the community feels that single-player experiences could suffer, with quality falling. Among these titles, we have the multiplayer of The Last of Us, which has faced problems and was identified by fans as a project at risk of cancellation.
