PlayStation Portal Update 7.1.7 Improves Battery Health and Performance

Sony has released firmware version 7.1.7 for the PlayStation Portal, bringing critical performance enhancements and a dedicated battery health management system. The update introduces a charging limit capped at 80 percent by default, which owners can adjust manually through the device system settings to preserve long-term cell capacity.

Charging Limit Controls and Battery Longevity

Sony’s firmware version 7.1.7 addresses this hardware lifespan issue by altering the charging behavior of the handheld device. Users will find the new toggle located directly under Settings, System, and Battery.

While the system defaults to an 80 percent ceiling to protect the internal battery, owners can override this threshold if they prefer maximum playtime per charge session. However, charging beyond 80 percent regularly may impact overall battery efficiency, long-term health, and system stability over time.

System Performance and Accessory Integration

Beyond power management, the 7.1.7 update refines overall software stability on the PlayStation Portal. Sony also implemented clearer on-screen text and smoother user interface interactions throughout the handheld’s operating system.

At the same time, Sony pushed out separate firmware packages for the Pulse Elite wireless headset and PlayStation Link hardware. Updating the PlayStation Link device software is mandatory for anyone planning to use the Pulse Elite headset alongside the PlayStation Portal.
