It may seem strange but the PlayStation 3 and the PlayStation Vita have both just received a new update. And this one does not come to add functionalities, but rather to remove some…

A new update for PS3 and PS Vita

Launched at the end of 2006 and in March 2007 in Europe, the PlayStation 3 is a legendary console but which is definitely not new. It has been on the market for fifteen years now, just that! And yet, the Sony machine has just received a new update has just upgraded its firmware to 4.89 ; just like the PlayStation Vitaportable machine marketed in 2011 (early 2012 with us), which passes in the version 3.74 of its software.

Sure, but for what? A simple update to “stabilize system performance”, after all these years of activity? Not really : Sony is rather, slowly, abandoning the machines for good. These updates focus on three things:

  • It is no longer possible to create a new PSN account from the consolePS3 like PS Vita
  • Several PSN account settings have also been removed
  • To log in to your PSN account, you must now have two-factor authentication activated and create a unique password for the device concerned

The new PlayStation Plus in sight?

Suffice to say that the Japanese company seems to have slowly started the end of its platforms, which would not be its first attempt: last year, Sony had already announced the closure of the PlayStation Store on PS3 and PS Vitamaking it impossible to buy hundreds and hundreds of games, some of which are exclusively available on the digital store.

Faced with the anger of the players, the manufacturer had finally opted for the backpedal and had not touched anything: the PS Store is still active as before on said machines. However, with these new updates that make the life of players a little more complicated about the PSN, we suspect that Sony intends to abandon its old babies, little by little.

Let’s not forget on top of that that the new PlayStation Plus will allow itself to “resurrect” the PS3 catalog with many cloud games for subscribers you PS Plus Premium : one more reason to make the PS3 truly obsolete and encourage subscription.
