Due to the recent events in Russia, especially the activities of the Wagner group in Belarus, Poland decided to significantly strengthen its border with its eastern neighbor. In the past, Warsaw has already increased its forces along the border in response to provocative military maneuvers in Belarus. Although there were initially reports of the deployment of only 2,000 soldiers, according to Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak’s announcement, the number will rise to 10,000. Of the added forces, 4,000 soldiers will directly support the border guard, while another 6,000 soldiers will be in the ranks of the reserves. – said the minister, emphasizing that the army will be brought closer to the border, as a deterrent against potential aggressors. Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki also warned of the dangers facing NATO’s eastern wing, which may arise due to the presence of the Wagner group in Belarus. In his opinion, provocations and sabotage actions are also possible. At the same time, Poland claimed that two Belarusian helicopters had violated Poland’s airspace, during an operation classified by Minsk as a training exercise. The exercises appear to be sporadic and ongoing. Morawiecki also expressed concern that members of the Wagner group may try to infiltrate Poland, although concrete evidence of this has not yet been made public. Neighboring countries such as Latvia and Lithuania are also planning similar measures to protect their borders. Although Belarus has not yet reacted to the military movements in Poland, Warsaw remains a strong supporter of Ukraine. However, President Andrzej Duda recently expressed doubts about whether a possible counterattack from Ukraine would be successful. In response to the question, Duda said that probably not. This development is yet another example of how tense the situation has become in the region and how cautious one must be about how events unfold. The international community is concerned about the tensions unfolding in the region and calls on the parties involved to dialogue and seek diplomatic solutions. In the coming weeks, the cooperation and mediation of the great powers may play a decisive role in order to avoid possible conflicts.
