Poland is a strategic partner in strengthening regional security, says E. Rinkevičius

On Wednesday, the President held talks in Riga with the Polish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Radoslaw Sikorski.

During the meeting, they discussed bilateral relations between Latvia and Poland, primarily defense cooperation, regional security issues and support for Ukraine in the fight against Moscow’s invasion.

E. Rinkevičius also emphasized Poland’s strategic role in strengthening the security of the Baltic Sea region.

In addition, during the meeting, the president thanked Poland for its participation in the Canada-led NATO Forward Combat Group in Latvia and the Baltic Airspace Protection Mission.

The current situation on the Ukrainian-Polish border and preparations for the NATO summit in Washington were also discussed at Wednesday’s meeting.

When discussing the issue of support for Ukraine, E. Rinkevičius noted that Latvia and Poland, together with other members of the European Union and NATO, must continue to provide maximum assistance to Kyiv.

At that time, R. Sikorski called on the US to approve the stuck support package for Ukraine, which is worth 60 billion. dollars (55 billion euros), referring to the recent incident when a Russian missile flew into Polish airspace.

“We’re only getting a small fraction of what Ukraine is getting,” he told reporters in Riga on Wednesday, referring to the missile attacks.

“I guess that some Western media outlets are not sufficiently shocked by this unprecedented wave of aerial terrorism against Ukraine,” said the head of Polish diplomacy.

“The US aid package for Ukraine is urgently needed,” added R. Sikorski.

R. Sikorski also stated that Poland will double its contribution to the Czech initiative to buy ammunition for Ukraine.
