Spring is light and colorful at the Baur Foundation. Windows Pop Up! open on treasures from the reserves. Each ephemeral showcase explores an unusual theme and transports us to a specific universe, staged with subtlety. The pieces brought together in meticulous and elegant constellations match the refined presentation of the permanent collections. Here, it is the miniature world of “little beasts” that reveals its decorative and symbolic richness in Chinese and Japanese arts; or that of cherry blossoms with the traditional practice of Hanami (viewing flowers). There, it is an opening on Japanese mythology, around Raijin and Fûjin, gods of thunder and wind. Further on, we discover Zhong Kui, a popular protective deity, often represented in Chinese prints or on lucky objects. Elsewhere are superb silk kimonos, embroidered with gold and silver threads, with varied patterns of flowers, pines and clouds.

Selected by the mediation manager, Marie Wyss, sinologist and art historian, these subjects were chosen for their ability to tell stories. It is the transmission, and the link with the public, which takes precedence in this spring project which also sees an impressive number of activities flourish. Nocturnal drawing, traditional Chinese embroidery, ikebana (Japanese flower arrangement), creation of pop-up books or wire sculpture, discovery of haiku or the Japanese sword, multiple workshops invite the visitor to experience the museum differently, by learning certain arts, listening to a new lecture, spending a moment in the garden, open for the occasion, or in the tea-room with Emiko Okamoto, ambassador of Japanese tea in Switzerland. Final bouquet, a Chinese instrument will meet an Indian instrument during the closing concert.
We can salute the initiative of an institution that decompartmentalizes borders and opens the doors to the design of exhibitions, usually reserved for conservation and mediation. An approach which testifies to the growing importance of the latter and to the need, on the part of the public, to approach the works through the experience and practice, as an amateur, of creation.
