Pope Francis in reference to the Good Friday Agreement

VATICAN CITY – Calling for prayers for world peace, Pope Francis also referred to the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Peace Accords in his address in St. Peter’s Square the day following Easter.

The Pope said that this is the 25th year of the Good Friday Peace Agreement, which ended years of civil strife in Northern Ireland, and may the continuation of that historic process benefit all the people of Ireland. The Pope’s remarks referred to the political instability in Northern Ireland since Britain left the European Union.

The agreement signed on April 10, 1998 in Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland, is considered one of the most important peace agreements of the 20th century.
