Pope Francis will visit the Shrine of Fátima north of Lisbon on Saturday during his trip to Portugal. There the head of the Catholic Church will meet with sick youth and is expected to pray for peace. In Fátima, in the course of the year 1917, the Blessed Virgin Mary is said to have appeared several times to three shepherd children. Fátima is one of the most visited Catholic pilgrimage sites in the world.

The pontiff will take off in a helicopter from Lisbon in the morning (9:00 a.m. CEST) and will then be expected at the Fátima stadium. Around noon he travels back to the Portuguese capital to meet his fellow monks, the Jesuits, in the evening (7:00 p.m.). He will then hold a prayer vigil (9:45 p.m.) with the participants of the Catholic Church’s World Youth Day (WYD) in Tejo Park. On Sunday he celebrates the closing Mass of World Youth Day in Lisbon.

At the end of the Pope’s visit, the Portuguese issued a weather warning. Temperatures of up to 41 degrees are expected, it said on Saturday night. The papal mass on Sunday is celebrated in a large park without shade. Authorities expect more than a million people. World Youth Day participants received what the organizers called a “pilgrim’s pack” which included a hat and a reusable water bottle
