Pope Leo XIV. has landed in Uruguay, beginning his twelve-day trip through South America. The 71-year-old head of the Catholic Church arrived at the international airport Carrasco near the capital Montevideo on Friday at 4:20 PM local time, according to the Uruguayan newspaper “El País”. Upon leaving the aircraft, the pontiff waved to those present. The journey, which will also take him to Argentina and Peru, started earlier on Friday morning after a departure from Rome shortly after 7 AM.
Official Welcoming and Presidential Meeting
Following his arrival, an official welcoming ceremony is scheduled on the Plaza Independencia in Montevideo. Subsequently, a meeting with Yamandú Orsi, 59, is planned.
A Significant Health Challenge
The South American visit represents a significant health challenge for Leo XIV. Just mid-October, the 71-year-old had the lower lobe of his right lung removed at the Gemelli Clinic in Rome. A tissue examination revealed an adenocarcinoma, and no further oncological treatments are necessary. The Holy See approved the trip at the end of October. Despite the surgery having taken place only a few weeks prior, this will be the longest foreign trip of his pontificate.
Itinerary and Personal Connection to Peru
During his time in Uruguay, Pope Leo XIV. will also visit the cities of Paysandú and Florida to hold masses. His journey will continue to Argentina on November 8 and to Peru on November 11. Peru holds a special significance for the Pope, as he spent many years of his life there and served as a bishop. The South American tour is scheduled to end on November 17.
