Portland vintage and apparel shop Shirtzenpantz has completed its oversized outfit with what it bills as the world’s largest flannel shirt, unveiling the custom garment during a Thursday evening celebration at the intersection of Southwest Park Avenue and Southwest Washington Street.
Pendleton Wool and Local Craftsmanship
Spanning approximately 9 feet wide by 13 feet long, the red-and-black checkered top is built from authentic Pendleton wool. The massive garment serves as a replica of Pendleton’s classic Canyon Shirt, a heritage brand wool style, and was assembled locally through a collaboration with the Portland Garment Factory.
The Logic Behind the Giant Wardrobe
Ethan, a representative for Shirtzenpantz, explained during a television appearance that the project came together naturally following a partnership request from the heritage brand. “What are pants without a shirt in ‘Shirtzenpantz’ right?” Ethan said, adding that the team wanted to assemble the world’s largest outfit.
Brass Bands and Street-Level Revelry
Thursday’s public reveal featured live music performed by a brass band while the garment was unfurled for attendees. The celebration also included free food and a local referee who managed the flow of the street-level festivities.
Architectural Hurdles for Permanent Display
The establishment already features a colossal pair of denim pants spanning its entrance, where visitors regularly walk directly through the pant legs to enter the building. Store staff noted that the long-term objective is to place the new wool top on permanent view inside the shop. However, finding sufficient wall and ceiling space to showcase both oversized garments simultaneously presents a creative architectural challenge for the team.
