POSCO International has laid the groundwork for stably securing graphite, which is used as a raw material for secondary battery anode materials in Africa. In response to the US Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), it is speeding up the reduction of dependence on China in the battery supply chain.

POSCO International announced on the 4th that it had signed a business agreement with Canadian mining company Next Source in Antananarivo, Madagascar on the 28th of last month for joint investment in the Molo graphite mine. With this agreement, POSCO International predicted that it would be able to procure impression graphite (30,000 tons per year) or spherical graphite (15,000 tons per year) produced in the Molo mine for 10 years.

Impression graphite is a natural graphite that can be used as an anode material for secondary batteries because of its rich insulating properties. Spherical graphite is graphite that has been reprocessed into a sphere to use the particle shape of natural graphite for manufacturing secondary battery anode materials.

The graphite secured this time is planned to be supplied to POSCO Future M, a secondary battery business company within the group. POSCO Future M is the only company in Korea that uses graphite to mass-produce anode materials for secondary batteries and supplies them to major customers at home and abroad.

In addition, on the 1st, POSCO International signed a business agreement with Blackrock Mining of Australia in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania to discuss increasing the amount of natural graphite purchase rights from Mahengi mine to about 60,000 tons per year by participating in the company’s capital increase. has concluded

Through these two business agreements, POSCO International expects to be able to secure more than 90,000 tons of impression graphite annually in the future from Madagascar (30,000 tons) and Tanzania (60,000 tons).
