Poverty reduction: more than 163 billion FCFA collected

LDonors continue to have confidence in the transitional government. And for good reason, from October 9 to 15, 2023, the ministerial delegation which took part in Marrakech, Morocco, in the Assemblies annual 2023 of the Group of world Bank and the International Monetary Fund (WB) returned to the country with their arms full with more than 50 billion FCFA for the benefit of vulnerable populations. The donors were the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). The good news in terms of financing by technical and financial partners (PTF) continued on October 26, 2026, with the World Bank, which granted the sum of 163 billion FCFA to Burkina Faso.

PMDUVS: 118 billion FCFA

The Minister of Economy, Finance and Foresight, Dr Aboubakar Nacanabo, and the Director of Operations of the World Bank for Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger and Chad, Clara Ana De Sousa, carried out the signing of two financing agreements for a total amount estimated at 249.3 million euros, or approximately 530 billion FCFA, granted to Burkina Faso in the form of a loan. According to the terms of the agreement, this sum is intended to finance two projects, namely the Secondary Cities Mobility and Urban Development Project (PMDUVS) and the Regional Women’s Empowerment and Demographic Dividend Plus Project (SWEED+ ). But what about PMDUVS and SWEED+. The Burkinabè side informs that the PMDUVS aims to improve urban mobility, access to basic services and economic opportunities and to strengthen urban management capacities in secondary cities, precisely in Kaya, Ouahigouya and Bobo-Dioulasso. It is financed to the tune of 181.3 million euros, or approximately 118 billion, 925 million FCFA and will be implemented by the Ministry of Transport, Urban Mobility and Road Safety.

SWEED+, more than 44 billion FCFA

As for the Regional Project for Women’s Empowerment and Demographic Dividend Plus (SWEED+), it has a total cost of 68 million euros, or nearly 44 billion, 605 million FCFA and aims to increase access for girls and women to learning, economic opportunities and use of health services. This project will be implemented by the Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene for a period of 5 years. The aim of both projects is, ultimately, to reduce population poverty.

Moreover, the minister in charge of the PMDUVS project, namely the one in charge of transport, Roland Somda, noted that the implementation of these two projects would contribute to satisfying certain priority needs of the populations of cities and countryside, in particular, those who are the most vulnerable. More than a breath of fresh air, given the substantial amount received, Dr Aboubakar Nacanabo did not fail to praise the quality of the cooperation and the commitment of the TFPs to supporting Burkina Faso towards sustainable development.

Donors are scrambling in Burkina Faso

OOctober 2023, a month which allowed Burkina Faso to collect more than 212 billion FCFA from donors such as BADEA, IFAD and recently, the World Bank. These great promises of investments for the benefit of vulnerable populations are not for the fine games of men of integrity, because they are loans that the country will then have to repay, accompanied by interest rates. However: firstly, this interest from the PTF is a sign that Burkina Faso, despite the socio-political crisis (2 coups in one year), security and unprecedented humanitarian crisis, continues to benefit from the confidence of donors.

Second: it is certainly a sign that the country is an example in repaying its contracted debt.
