Czech police chief Martin Vondrasek told reporters that police began searching for the would-be attacker even before the shooting following a tip-off following his father was found dead in the village of Hostoun, west of Prague. The shooter “left for Prague saying he wanted to commit suicide“, Mr. Vondrasek said. Police had previously suggested that the gunman had killed his father.

The police first searched the building of the Faculty of Arts where the murderer was to attend a class, but the latter went to another building, located nearby, and the police did not find him in time .

HAS 1:59 p.m. GMT we received the first reports of the shooting“, Vondrasek said, adding that the rapid response unit was on scene within 12 minutes.”At 2:20 p.m. GMT, officers participating in the operation told us regarding the shooter’s motionless body“, he said, adding that, according to unconfirmed reports, he had committed suicide.

Citing a social media investigation, Vondrasek said the shooter was inspired by a “similar case which occurred in Russia this fall“, without going into details.”For the moment, there is nothing to suggest that there is any other imminent danger“, he stressed.

Vondrasek said no officers were injured on Thursday and police had not yet begun to identify the dead as of 1700 GMT because fireworks were still at work in the building.

It was the most serious shooting since the Czech Republic became an independent state in 1993 and caused a wave of emotion around the world.
