Justice spokeswoman for the Greens: With this law, there will no longer be a second Ibiza without criminal consequences

Vienna (OTS) – “With the amendment of the criminal law on corruption, we Greens are once again keeping our promise to create a basis for clean politics in Austria. This law is a direct reaction to the events in Ibiza and other incidents that have become well known in the media. There will be no such thing in the future without a corresponding penalty, because today we have closed the existing criminal liability gaps in the criminal law on corruption,” says the justice and constitutional spokeswoman for the Greens, Agnes Prammer, on the new version of the law passed today.

From now on, the bribery and corruption of not only current but also future officials will be punishable. In addition, a criminal offense “mandate purchase” is created. There will be severe penalties if a lot of money flows for such a person.

“Clean politics and transparency are important for people’s trust in democracy. We simply cannot afford corruption. It poisons social interaction and alienates citizens from those who have a mandate to make decisions for larger groups of people. In addition to all the other measures that we have already implemented in the anti-corruption area, such as strengthening the judiciary or the new law on political parties, the new criminal law on corruption is another important component in realizing our idea of a transparent and just state and democracy strengthen,” says Prammer.
