Premier League – A goal in the … 98th minute: Liverpool snatch victory against Newcastle (2-1)

How hard it was for Liverpool… Led to the score on their lawn against Newcastle and once again authors of a very dull performance, the Reds snatched the three points at the end of the suspense, on an improbable goal signed Fabio Carvalho (2- 1). Jürgen Klopp’s men, far from being on point collectively, only sign their second victory of the season in the Premier League, the second in a row certainly. The scenario is cruel for the Magpies, who will nevertheless be able to console themselves thanks to Jonathan Isak. The most expensive rookie in their history has already scored, and came close to scoring a brace and playing a nasty trick on Liverpool.

Supposed to be a boss of the English championship, Liverpool had to follow up after their incredible attacking card against Bournemouth (9-0). But, the least we can say is that the matches follow each other and are not alike for the Reds. Against the Magpies, they did not regain their offensive success at all, especially during a first period that was quite poor in clear chances. Conversely, Jonathan Isak was quite effective. It took him a first strike to adjust the target, before improving a nice pass in depth from Sean Longstaff (0-1, 38th). Solid behind, opportunistic in front, Newcastle were making the perfect match.

Liverpool unleashed, City stunning, Chelsea brave

We say thank you Carvalho

Proof that the leaders of the Magpies were not mistaken by putting 70 million euros on the table, Isak almost made the break at the end of an individual exploit which left Andrew Robertson and Joe Gomez on the spot. Unfortunately, an offside position of a few centimeters deprived the Swedish nugget of a double (54th). And, then, his team, by dint of accumulating efforts, ended up cracking against much more biting Reds on the way back from the locker room. The revolt was launched by Roberto Firmino, whom we did not see much this Wednesday evening but who was ideally launched by Mohamed Salah (1-1, 61st).

Despite the equalizer in the pocket, Liverpool were still far from being out of the woods, in particular due to the clumsiness of Luis Diaz (79th, 81st). The club, undefeated at Anfield against Newcastle since 1994, pushed for a long time, without managing to find the net a second time. He probably wanted to be desired: on the final action, in this case a corner conceded after a counter strike from Salah, the Magpies fumbled in their area. The young Fabio Carvalho took the opportunity to propel the ball at close range (2-1, 90th + 8). It was breathtaking for the show, but still, Liverpool is not very reassuring. Here he is again in the top 5, seven lengths from the lead occupied by Arsenal.
