Premier League: Arsenal beat Manchester United in wild top game – Gunners take next step

The top game kept what it promised. Leaders Arsenal showed a high tempo from the first minute and Thomas Partey had their first chance. The Ghanaian made his attempt from close range just to the left of the goal (3′).

The Gunners dominated, the Londoners tried to be successful on the wings in particular – but the doorbell rang surprisingly in their own goal. Marcus Rashford, currently in superb form, shook off Partey in midfield and nailed the ball dry into the bottom left corner from almost 25 yards out. The Red Devils took the lead with the first shot on goal (17′).

Arsenal were undeterred, continued to show their power play and quickly equalized. A precise cross from Granit Xhaka was headed into the net by Eddie Nketiah from five yards out to make it 1-1 (24′).

Arsenal invested a lot, but from then on they were no longer really dangerous. United had another good opportunity when Scott McTominay shot through a pass from Antony. However, Gunners keeper Aaron Ramsdale parried the projectile of the Casemiro representative brilliantly (28th). It was 1-1 at the break.

Arsenal continued to run after the break and were swiftly rewarded with a fine solo effort from Bukayo Saka. The lightning-fast winger moved inwards with a quick attack in the right half field, shook off Christian Eriksen and shot dry from 23 meters into the bottom left corner to give Arsenal the lead (53′).

Just six minutes later, substitute Takehiro Tomiyasu conceded a corner for United and then blocked his own keeper’s exit from catching the ball. Instead, the ball landed at Lisandro Martinez, who made it 2-2 over the keeper (59′). Shortly before, Ramsdale had saved Arsenal from equalizing with a world-class save against Rashford (55′).

Arsenal pushed forward with anger in their stomachs and turned up the heat: Nketiah’s shot from a few meters was blocked by Rapahel Varane’s foot (64′), an attempt by Martin Odegaard from eleven meters was deflected into a corner and Saka scored in a similar move as with his goal the left post (70th).

The Gunners didn’t give up and pushed on relentlessly. David de Gea quickly parried Nketiah’s shot from six meters out and once again saved his team from going behind (84′). Nevertheless, it happened as it had to: In the last minute, Ödegaard passed a low Zinchenko cross from the penalty spot to Nketiah, who pushed the ball over the line from close range with his shin to make it 3-2 late (90′). The goal was checked but counted. Arsenal won and consolidated their lead with a great final sprint.

The votes for the game:

Bukayo Saka (FC Arsenal): “We really wanted to win in front of our fans and we did it. I think you saw how important this win was for us. The start really wasn’t ideal but we stuck with it and showed character. I’m very happy.”

Eddie Nketiah (FC Arsenal): “We kept pushing and pushing and luckily we had the happier ending on our side.”

The tweet about the game:

23-year-old Nketiah’s second goal of the night in the 90th minute decided the top game against Manchester United in the Gunners’ favour. For the striker, who is currently replacing the injured Gabriel Jesus, it was the sixth goal in the last six competitive games.

That was noticeable: United’s effectiveness is not enough

United was clearly inferior in terms of play. In particular, the otherwise dangerous offensive forces Antony and Bruno Fernandes hardly took place. The only ray of hope was again Rashford, who is in great shape.

The Red Devils scored the first shot on goal to make it surprisingly 1-0. After the change of sides, a mismatch between Ramsdale and Tomiyasu favored the 2-2 draw for the guests.

Despite only six shots on goal, Eric ten Hag’s team made life difficult for the league leaders for a long time, but in the end deservedly lost. Arsenal created 25 shots on target over the entire season – nearly five times that number.

The stats: 16

Nketiah’s 90th-minute goal gave the Gunners their 16th win of the season in 19 games. With two draws, there has only been one defeat so far – on the sixth day of the game against today’s opponent United. The Arteta team successfully avenged the 1:3 defeat today.
