Premier League, day 21 – Manchester United beaten by Wolverhampton (0-1), Ronaldo mute as captain

New year, but still the same evils on the side of Manchester United. For their first match in 2022, the Red Devils conceded a logical defeat, on their lawn, against Wolverhampton, during a match where they failed, both in the commitment and in the technical execution (0-1 ). Joao Moutinho inflicted his first defeat on Ralf Rangnick on the Mancunian bench. A setback that leaves Cristiano Ronaldo’s teammates 4 points from 4th place, with one game less.

They couldn’t have started the year worse. While remaining on a streak of eight games unbeaten since the departure of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the residents of Old Trafford wanted to get back into the race for the Champions League. After the success against Burnley (3-1), Rangnick had chosen to renew the same team, except for a central hinge reworked due to absences: Raphael Varane and Phil Jones, back in the Premier League almost 2 years later, however lived an ordeal.

De Gea had kept MU in the match

They are far from being the only ones, but the association lacking a benchmark did not help reassure a team pierced with almost every Wolves offensive in the first period. The Premier League’s worst attacking shot 14 times at David De Gea’s goals in the first 45 minutes, which says a lot about the excitement of his side in this game. Fortunately, the Spanish goalkeeper released the parades he needed to keep his team afloat (12th, 13th, 19th).

On their rare offensives, the Mancunians have also multiplied the blunders. Mason Greenwood, one of the only local players to make the difference, was however taken out on time, in favor of Bruno Fernandes. A change which could surprise at the time, but which proved the German tactician right, since his team then woke up. The Portuguese wisp was not far from opening the scoring but stumbled on the bar of José Sa (67th).

After a goal denied to Ronaldo for an offside (68th) and an overly crossed strike from the five-fold Golden Ball (69th), Old Trafford began to dream of victory. But their hopes were showered by Moutinho. On a ball pushed back in the axis at the entrance to the surface, the former Monegasque deceived De Gea with a half-volley (0-1, 82nd). Lacking in character, the Red Devils only made Wolves tremble at the last second, on this free kick from Fernandes pushed back by Sa (90th + 6). They will have to bounce back next week in the FA Cup against Aston Villa.
