Presencia, a town in Burgos with 200 inhabitants where the mother of Virginia Villacisla (Burgos, 28 years old) and where this author has spent every summer of her life. “Presence” is also the first person singular of the present indicative of the verb to witness. Villacisla explores in his project Presencio & The Rural Kids the circumstances of the Castilian towns that have been emptied as a consequence of the rural exodus. The photographer establishes a dialogue with places that are in a time without time, between progress and return. The images refer to lawless summers, open-air love affairs, bottles in the tombola… It is the way in which young people, before becoming adults with responsibilities, interact with inherited rural spaces. The wild, the instinctive, the frenzy, the freedom… But, above all, it means growing up in a community in a place stopped in time. A place without a future, but which, strangely, offers a certain security —because it has always been and will always be there. This project delves into the identity and memory associated with spaces in transition. Where people see a lot of nothing, Villacisla sees things. She wants to show them.
