BREWER from Indonesia Ryan Wibawa won third place in the 2024 World Brewers Cup competition, Monday (15/4) in Chicago, United States (US).

Carrying the theme of Bhinneka Tunggal Ika, Ryan unites coffee from three countries with different percentages.

“So for the final round, I brought three coffees which I combined into one, 70% from Panama, then 20% coffee from Colombia, and 10% from Indonesia, namely from Sumedang, West Java,” explained Ryan to Media Indonesia via WhatsApp. , Tuesday (16/4).

Before competing on an international scale, a brewer must first win a competition in their respective country. Ryan was able to compete in the final because he won a national scale competition in Indonesia in December 2023.

“There are 24 competitors (on a national scale), I am one of them. “Then I won first place and had the opportunity to represent Indonesia at the World Brewers Cup in Chicago,” said Ryan

In the final round of the World Brewers Cup, Ryan said that all the contestants had competed freely. Because, according to him, all the baristas who competed until the final round had represented their respective countries very well

“We have all represented as coffee ambassadors from our respective countries, and the six of us have given the best results and for myself I got 3rd place,” he said.

Even though his performance declined in the final round, Ryan admitted that he had no regrets or resentment. He said he was very happy with the final results obtained. The message, said Ryan, is the main aspect of this competition.

He is proud to be able to present the spirit of Bhinneka Tunggal Ika to the world. Because, according to him, the nation’s values ​​really describe the coffee industry in the world.

“Indonesia has a spirit called Bhineka Tunggal Ika, which means unity in diversity, which for me really represents community friends in coffee,” said Ryan.

“Because as seen yesterday, in Chicago and at the Specialty Coffee Expo, we could meet many people from any country, from any background, whether they were farmers, whether they were roasters, baristas, customers, judges. “, volunteers, people who compete there, we have the same goal, namely advancing the coffee industry,” he continued.

To reach third place in the world, Ryan said he trained regularly.

“Practice is routine, and usually when it’s close to the time we leave yesterday, around two weeks or three weeks before that, the training is really intense, usually every day we definitely practice,” said Ryan.

The way to present the coffee he makes is practiced many times so that it gets the maximum performance. The long training he carried out produced results that made Indonesia proud.

“Practice the presentation, we do what we want to convey on the stage for 10 minutes, we present it, we try to simulate what the brewing process is like, usually we repeat it over and over again until we get the right moment, smooth, delicious for us to show on the World stage this Brewers Cup,” he added.

This achievement, Ryan said, could have a positive impact on the coffee industry in Indonesia. He also hopes that in the future Indonesia can get first place.

“So for this third position, I am very, very happy, happy. “This is for Indonesia, hopefully it can have a positive impact on the coffee industry in Indonesia and inspire friends in Indonesia that we can do it and who knows, in the years to come we could win first place,” he concluded. (Z-1)
