President Embalo dissolves Parliament

Guinea-Bissau President Umaro Sissoco Embalo dissolved parliament on Monday, citing an “institutional crisis”, a presidential decree said.
In this document, the Head of State argued that “Parliament does not get along with the judicial power, namely the Court of Auditors and the Office of the Attorney General”.
“The political crisis that has called into question the normal institutional links between the organs of sovereignty is now evident,” said President Embalo.
In his decree, he mentions “persistent differences that cannot be resolved” with Parliament.
“With this political crisis, the capital of trust between the organs of sovereignty is exhausted,” he insisted.
“After hearing the President of the People’s National Assembly (Parliament), the political parties represented in Parliament and the Council of State, I took the decision to dissolve the People’s National Assembly of the 10th legislature and to advance the holding of legislative elections” by the end of the year, he said.
“I have decided to give the floor to Guineans so that this year again, they can freely choose at the ballot box the parliament they wish to have,” he added.
As a reminder, it was at the end of June 2020 that the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC) lost its parliamentary majority to the benefit of the alliance of President-elect Umaro Sissoco Embaló, who had won thus a new battle.
Stability remains precarious in this country broken with political crises and institutional deadlocks, where coalitions never last very long.
