Biden, who will attend a bilateral meeting with Modi on Friday, will also attend summit sessions on Saturday and Sunday.
NEW DELHI: President Joe Biden will hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Friday ahead of the weekend’s G20 summit, the US confirmed on Wednesday. The Indian Express has learned that the government is considering inviting leaders of the Quad Group for next year’s Republic Day celebrations.
A final decision will be taken only after ensuring the availability of President Biden, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, sources said.
The invitation to be the Republic Day Chief Guest is highly symbolic from the government’s point of view. New Delhi is hospitably scheming to decide the chief guest for Republic Day. The chief guest is chosen every year for several reasons such as strategic and diplomatic, business interest and international geopolitics.
A formal invitation is usually sent after the leaders’ availability has been informally ascertained. Sources said India will confirm the availability of all the three leaders of the Quad Group as they will attend the G20 summit. Next year it is India’s turn to host the Quad Leaders Summit.
Now, all the three leaders have busy schedules ahead of them. By the end of 2024, Biden will be heading into an election year. January will be his last State of the Union address before the country heads to the polls.
The Australian government also celebrates National Day on January 26 in honor of the establishment of the first permanent European settlement on the island continent. Albanese will be busy with public celebrations and functions similar to Republic Day.
In Japan, the Diet (Parliament) session usually opens in the last week of January. Prime Minister Kishida is expected to be there during the first weeks of the budget session. The 150-day conference will start from January 23 next year.
