On the morning of the 19th, Lim Hyun-taek, president of the Korean Association of Pediatrics and Adolescent Physicians (representative of Doctors Thinking About the Future), charged Minister of Health and Welfare Cho Gyu-hong and Second Vice Minister Park Min-soo with abuse of power and obstruction of the exercise of rights in relation to the expansion of medical schools at the Gwacheon Government Complex in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi Province. They are clarifying their position before filing a complaint with the investigative office. /News 1

Lim Hyun-taek, president of the Korean Association of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, was elected as the new president of the Korean Medical Association (KMA) on the 26th. The term of office is three years from May 1. In his thoughts on being elected, he said, “I will become a senior who believes in the residents and medical students and provides strength to them.” The Korean Medical Association is a legal organization to which all doctors in Korea belong and has over 130,000 members.

According to the Korean Medical Association, President-elect Lim Hyun-taek was elected by receiving 21,646 votes (65.43%) out of a total of 33,084 valid votes in the electronic voting for the presidential election runoff that lasted from the previous day to 6 PM on this day. Su-ho Joo, chairman of the Public Relations Committee of the Emergency Response Committee of the Medical Association, who also participated in the runoff election, received 11,438 votes (34.57%).

President-elect Lim is considered the hardliner who most strongly opposed the government’s expansion of medical schools among the five candidates running in this year’s Korean Medical Association presidential election. On the 15th, he announced, “If I am elected as the president of the Korean Medical Association, I will lead a general strike of doctors as the elected president.” On the 19th, Minister of Health and Welfare Cho Kyu-hong and Second Vice Minister Park Min-soo, who ordered the deserted residents to return to work, were reported to the High-ranking Public Officials Crime Investigation Office on charges of abuse of power. He is also being investigated by the police on charges of leading a group action by medical residents.

In this election, he made promises such as ‘revising the law on revocation of medical licenses’, ‘banning PA nurses from acting as doctors’, and ‘separating oriental medicine insurance from health insurance’.

People in the medical community said, “The fact that President-elect Lim received nearly twice as many votes as his opponent in the finals means that doctors’ antipathy toward the government’s expansion of medical schools is that strong.” It is highly likely that the level of the Korean Medical Association’s struggle against the government will increase in the future.

He told this newspaper on this day, “The current situation is a crisis brought on by the government and the ruling party, so to resolve this situation, Minister of Health and Welfare Cho Gyu-hong and Second Vice Minister Park Min-soo must be dismissed.” He added, “The number of medical school students should not be increased, but rather reduced by 500 to 1,000, and the government should reduce the number of students by 500 to 1,000.” “The essential medical (support) package must be completely canceled,” he said.
