The president of the Board of Directors of the Electoral Service (Servel), Andrés Tagle, defended the idea of holding the elections on October 27 in two days, emphasizing that this should evaluate the “dry law” and the closure of malls and malls.
This initiative responds to the mandatory nature of voting, the current electoral roll and the four ballots to elect regional governors, regional councillors, mayors and councillors. The Government, meanwhile, decided to accept the request and send a bill.
In conversation with Cooperativa radio, Tagle referred to the “dry law”, which applies from 05:00 in the morning on election day and up to two hours after the tables close, and stated that it is a very old, so it is “revisable”, mainly for the normal operation of restaurants.
Regarding commerce, the regulations establish that those malls, shopping centers and galleries that are under an organization must close on election day, which Tagle also called for a review.
“I think that by extending it to two days we make it much easier for voters and, therefore, this can be taken advantage of,” since it would not make sense for the rule of two hours of permission to go to vote to exist, since “The commercial worker may have to work on Saturday or Sunday, or half of each day or a day to go to vote, and they can work the respective shifts.”
With this, he raised the idea of “making life normal for the voter” in these two days, since although “the voter has the obligation to go to the premises, obviously that takes a while, but let’s not give them two abnormal days, If you want to go to a restaurant or want to go to a mall to buy something, or to a movie theater, you can do all of that.”
However, he said that there are restrictions that should remain, such as the “prohibition on mass events, they can be sporting events, concerts, that type of thing.”
