[의학신문·일간보사=이정윤 기자] A review study from Poland found that coffee and tea help prevent arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease.

These two drinks are said to reduce the level of inflammation, which is considered the ‘source of all diseases,’ and lower the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Korea Food said that this was revealed as a result of a meta-analysis of existing research papers that tracked the correlation between coffee and tea and cardiovascular disease by Professor Stanisław Surma’s team from the Department of Preventive Cardiology and Fat Studies at Rhodes Medical University (MUL) in Poland. Communication Forum reported.

Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of premature death worldwide. It is easy to develop if you have high blood pressure or diabetes, or have high levels of inflammation or C-reactive protein (CRP).

In many observational studies collected by the research team, consumption of coffee and tea significantly reduced cardiovascular risk and mortality. A meta-analysis of nine research papers showed that coffee consumption lowered blood CRP levels.

An increase in CRP in the blood indicates acute infection or inflammation. A meta-analysis of 12 research papers found that coffee consumption increases adiponectin levels.

Adiponectin, known as a ‘good hormone’, is a type of protein secreted by fat cells and helps prevent obesity, diabetes, and arteriosclerosis by improving insulin resistance.

In the paper, the research team said, “Consumption of coffee and tea was found to increase adiponectin concentration, reduce free radicals, and lower low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels, which are harmful to vascular health,” and “consumption of coffee and tea is recommended as part of a healthy diet.” “This is the conclusion of our research,” he pointed out.
