Adult men and women aged 50 to 73 years follow-up and observation for 8 years … 70% difference in risk of dementia depending on family history

Even if you have a family history of dementia, your risk can be greatly reduced through early screening and healthy lifestyle habits.

Actor Yoon Yong-hyeon (55 years old) recently appeared on a cable TV current affairs program and revealed his family history of dementia, making viewers feel sorry.

He revealed that he is living as a seagull father while running a Korean beef distribution business in Nonsan. After his father passed away four years ago, his mother showed symptoms of dementia. He received a lot of love for his role as Dok2 in the drama ‘Wangcho’.

Many people are afraid of having a family history of dementia, thinking, ‘Will I get dementia too? However, there is no need to panic just because you have a family history. Family history should be considered as a ‘positive signal’ that allows you to live a long and healthy life without getting sick if you prepare for a specific disease in advance.

Family history is a combination of not only heredity but also environmental factors such as a family’s lifestyle. So if you detect it early and deal with it, you don’t have to be afraid. If you find out the possibility of developing dementia through a blood test at a public health center and have a healthy lifestyle, you can overcome it. <편집자 주>

Even if there is a family history of dementia, lifestyle changes can significantly reduce the risk of dementia.

Dr. Angelique Brelentin and Dr. Ames of Iowa State University, USA, presented a research report on this at the recently held ‘Epidemiology, Prevention, Lifestyle and Cardiac Metabolic Health Conference’ sponsored by the American Heart Association.

According to the report, the research team reviewed information on 302,239 adult males and females between the ages of 50 and 73 who were registered with the UK Biobank and did not have a diagnosis of dementia.

A biobank refers to a human resource bank that freezes and preserves human resources such as blood, cells, tissues, plasma, saliva, urine, and DNA collected from humans and provides them to researchers upon request. The importance of biobanks is emerging with the spread of precision medical services that provide individual treatment methods by analyzing patients’ genome, clinical, and lifestyle information.

As a result of follow-up and observation for an average of 8 years, it was confirmed that 1,698 people, or 0.8% of the participants, had dementia. In addition, those with a family history of dementia increased their risk of dementia by 70% compared to those without a family history.

Prior to the study, the research team asked participants to fill out a questionnaire about their family history and lifestyle. The questionnaire consists of six lifestyle habits: ▲healthy diet ▲at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity per week ▲6 to 9 hours of sleep each day ▲moderate drinking ▲no smoking ▲maintaining a body mass index below the level of obesity (less than 30kg/㎥) it was

As a result of the survey, among the participants, those who answered all six items as their usual lifestyle reduced the risk of dementia by half compared to those who answered two or less items. In addition, those who marked three items had a 30% reduced risk of dementia compared to those who surveyed two or fewer items.

Among participants with a family history of dementia, those who rated three items as their lifestyle had a 25% to 35% reduced risk of dementia compared to those with two or fewer lifestyle habits.

The research team said, “There is no need to be very frustrated if you have a family history of dementia,” and “If you have a family history, you can greatly reduce the risk through healthy lifestyle habits.”
