Preventing Depression in Older Adults with Regular Physical Activity: Evidence from a Cohort Study

[Voice of Hope, July 28, 2023]In recent years, depression has become more and more well-known. Depression, with higher prevalence in older age groups, is an important risk factor for several major chronic diseases, including cognitive and physical decline, cardiovascular disease, chronic pain, and increases the risk of all-cause mortality and suicide.

Studies have shown that regular physical activity can help prevent depression.

Recently, an Irish study published in the JAMA sub-journal further found that for residents aged ≥ 50 years, there is a negative dose-response relationship between moderate and high-intensity physical activity and depressive symptoms and risk of depression, but even if the activity level has not reached the guideline recommendation The amount of moderate-intensity physical activity (150 minutes per week) and only 100 minutes per week of moderate-intensity physical activity (such as 20 minutes of brisk walking per day) can also reduce the risk of depression.

The study included 4016 adults aged ≥50 years, 54.9% of whom were women, with an average age of 61 years. During the 10-year follow-up period, the incidence of depression increased from 8.2% to 12.2%.

Further analysis showed that compared with those who did not participate in physical activity, those who had a weekly physical activity of 400-600 MET-min (equivalent to 20 minutes of moderate-to-high-intensity exercise per day, 5 days a week) were less likely to experience depressive symptoms and depression. Risk reductions were 16% and 43%, respectively.

When moderate to high-intensity physical activity is 30 minutes, 6 minutes, and 120 minutes a day, the risk of depressive symptoms is reduced by 7%, 16%, and 23%, respectively, and the risk of depression is reduced by 44%, 41%, and 49%, respectively.

Among patients with chronic diseases, the risk of depressive symptoms and depression decreased by 8% and 44%, respectively, when the weekly physical activity was 600-1200 MET-min.

For people without chronic diseases, weekly physical activity needs > 2400 MET-min to achieve a similar protective effect (19% lower risk of depressive symptoms).

The authors note that they are not advocating less physical activity in older age groups, and that the findings suggest that the greatest protective effect in this population may require participation in physical activity through less active people, even at levels below The amount of WHO medical examination is also available.
