Preventing Pressure Sores in Advanced Stage Dementia Patients

2023-06-09 10:31:27

Dementia is a term that describes a group of symptoms associated with the ongoing deterioration of the brain. Due to its effect on the brain, it may cause memory loss and even behavioral changes in its initial stages.

Patients may also have difficulty with language, understanding others, and their ability to think. Since dementia is a degenerative condition, symptoms will get worse over time.

According to the Alzheimer’s Society, “As dementia progresses into later stages, people may experience difficulties with memory and concentration, as well as difficulty with movement and speech.”

The charity says there are four physical signs that could mean a person has advanced-stage dementia. These indicators are:

Loss of the ability to walk

Loss of the ability to stand

Loss of ability to get up from a chair or bed

The patient is more likely to fall

The charity explains: “Dementia is likely to have a significant physical impact on a person in the later stages of the condition. They may gradually lose their ability to walk, stand or get out of a chair or bed. They may also be more likely to fall.”

These problems can be caused by several factors associated with their condition, including:

Dementia medication

Other medical conditions (such as strokes)

Loss of vision

Balance problems

Uncomfortable environment

The risks of limited movement

As a result of these mobility issues, people with dementia may not move as much as they used to, leaving them vulnerable to other health problems. This includes pressure sores.

The Alzheimer’s Society says: “Many people with dementia (especially in the later stages) find themselves in one position for a long time (such as sitting in a chair) and don’t move much. This means they are at risk of developing pressure ulcers (bedsores).” The charity added: “Pressure sores can be easy to prevent early on. However, if time goes unnoticed, sores can become painful and infected.”

Pressure sores often grow on the skin that covers bony areas of the body, such as the heels, ankles, hips, and coccyx.

To check for pressure sores, look for rashes, skin discoloration, especially if it doesn’t turn white after pressure, pain or itching, or warm or hard skin.

The charity advises changing mattresses and pillows to reduce pressure on the skin, and seeing a general practitioner if you see any of these symptoms or have concerns.
