Suspect red marks or lines on the skin
Possibility of death in a short period of time… Request for quick treatment

According to foreign media such as the BBC on the 22nd (local time), Nakita Harden (33) from Norwich, England, suffered a cut on her thumb while picking up a bowling ball at a bowling alley in November last year. Haden initially thought nothing of the injury, but after a few hours he felt unbearable pain in his thumb. During the night he felt extremely thirsty and lethargic.

A long red line appeared on Haden’s arm. Eventually, Haden sensed something strange about her and rushed to the hospital, where she was diagnosed with sepsis. Sepsis is a condition in which infection with microorganisms causes an inflammatory response throughout the body, such as fever, rapid pulse, increased respiratory rate, and increased or decreased white blood cell count.

Afterwards, he underwent emergency surgery to suture a large hole in his thumb caused by an infection, and it is said that the long line remained faint and did not disappear until the day of the surgery. Haden said it took two weeks to fully recover from his wounds. He explained that although the medical staff removed as much of the infected area as possible, suturing was difficult because the wound was located on the finger joint.

If you see red marks or lines on your skin like Haden’s, you may suspect sepsis. When the inflammation of the wound spreads, red lines can be seen extending over time along the lymphatic vessels in the body, causing painful skin swelling. At this time, in severe cases, it develops into necrotizing fasciitis, in which the fascial tissue dies, and the bacterial toxin spreads into the entire blood, leading to sepsis.

Early symptoms of sepsis may include accelerated breathing, loss of awareness of time, place, and people, and neurological disorders such as delirium. The skin may appear bluish due to a decrease in blood pressure and a decrease in the amount of blood supplied to the extremities of the body. Symptoms of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and intestinal paralysis may appear, and in severe stress situations, symptoms of bleeding in the digestive system may also appear. Special caution is required as death can occur within a short period of time after the onset of sepsis. If symptoms appear, you should immediately go to the hospital and receive treatment. Experts believe that the mortality rate is very high if appropriate treatment is not provided or if it is accompanied by dysfunction of body organs or shock.

Sepsis can be treated using appropriate antibiotics after finding the source of infection in the body through physical examination, blood tests, and imaging tests. When treating sepsis, the patient’s blood pressure must be maintained appropriately and blood and oxygen must be sufficiently supplied to each tissue in the body.

Kim Young-soo, a professor of nephrology at Uijeongbu St. Mary’s Hospital, said, “Sepsis has a very high fatality rate, but if we pay social attention and manage it properly, the mortality rate can be reduced. If symptoms of sepsis appear, go to the hospital quickly and receive appropriate treatment within the ‘golden time.’ “Do it,” he urged.
