A devastated mum who discovered the lifeless bodies of her 4-year-old twin daughters in a small toy box in which the family stored stuffed animals has pleaded with parents to get rid of similar furnishings after they suffocated to death.
“Few people will know the pain of losing two children at the same time and in a way that makes no sense. […] few people will know the feeling of trying not to spend EVERY waking second crying in agony, to the point of falling in pain,” the twins’ mother, Sadie Myers, of Jacksonville, Florida, lamented in a post on Facebook Monday.
With a heavy heart, the mother of Aurora and Kellan, two 4-year-old twins, and two slightly older boys decided to recount the nightmare she has been living since last Friday, in the hope that her testimony will prevent others parents to make the same mistake, several media reported.
The previous day, her husband had put the children to bed, and they were all sound asleep by the time the mother returned from work.
Except that in the middle of the night, the twins, who used to wake up to play a little with their toys before falling asleep out of bed, would have chosen a small wooden toy chest filled with stuffed animals to finish their night.
“What I didn’t know and I’m sure many others don’t know is that most wooden toy chests when closed are AIRTIGHT […] As they slept, all huddled together, they slowly ran out of oxygen, ”continued the mother in her message.
It was only in the early morning that the parents would have noticed, in a panic, that their two daughters were no longer in their beds, to the point of “turning the house upside down and shouting their names in the street”, until one of their boys told them he had just found them “asleep in the toy box,” according to the publication.
“I ran to check and within seconds I knew something was wrong. […] Doesn’t make sense to me and never will… Hope knowing this helps you somehow, and hope if you have a toy box like this one, you will destroy it immediately”, hammered Sadie Myers on Facebook.
A crowdfunding campaign was set up by relatives to facilitate the mourning of both parents.
