According to Professor Bathokédéou Amana, head of the Otolaryngology department at Sylvanus Olympio University Hospital in Lomé, 7% of patients with goiter develop thyroid cancer.
And few patients consult a doctor. They wait until complications arise to go to the hospital.
“It is crucial to raise awareness among the population about the importance of prevention and early detection,” emphasizes Professor Amana.
Goiter is very present in the Plateaux, Savanes and Central regions.
